Fortress / Old Castle

he oldest inhabited German fortress, one of the attractions around the Lake Constance and town emblem. In the comprehensive Museum of Meersburg, you can discover the Middle Age as well as the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff.

An old legend and a 1548 document say that the creation of this impressive stronghold dates back to the 7th century, to the Merovingians under king Dagobert 1st.

A tour round the "Burgmuseum" (Fortress Museum) will take you, among others, to a medieval living area, through a Knights Hall, an Arms Hall, a well-room, a castle dungeon, chapels, guard’s walkways and towers, the picturesque fortress garden and the defensible northern bastion. Besides, you'll visit the workroom and death chamber of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, the most popular German poetess who lived in the fortress during her stays at Lake Constance.

Ancient music is also treasured in this incomparable Meersburg atmosphere: From July to September the "Carlina-Leut" perform Middle Age and Renaissance music at candlelight and with historical instruments.
